For those of you who have never heard of Floral City, it is a very small town in Citrus County, Florida, which is the third County North of Tampa Florida. If ever you wanted to experience “old Florida’, then this is the town you need to check out.

For those of you who have never heard of Floral City, it is a very small town in Citrus County, Florida, which is the third County North of Tampa Florida. If ever you wanted to experience “old Florida’, then this is the town you need to check out. Its humble beginnings date back to 1883, and it was named Floral City because of the abundance of wild flowers that grew then and still grow there to this day.

In the early days, it was a mining town, and was actually larger then Miami at that time, but with the start of World War I, the mining industry in Citrus was shut down, and it just never came back to the area. The Withlacoochee River borders the town to the east side, and the city basically sits right smack in the middle of the Withlacoochee State Forest. The biggest town that is closest to the North of Floral City is Inverness, FL, which is about 7 miles north. Down to the south about 13 miles is Brooksville, FL. It is also conveniently located just west of I-75, which takes you South to Tampa (54.2 miles), or can connect with I-4 on your way south towards Tampa, which will take you to Orlando, and all the theme parks it has to offer. Ocala and Gainesville are just north on I-75, so you can live in a quiet little sleepy town, buy your are less then 2 hours away from many major attractions, with Orlando being the farthest away.

Floral City is also where the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes starts and they run north to the Gulf of Mexico. It is about a 50 mile journey to the Gulf, winding through the lakes and Withlacoochee River. This is one of those places that hasn’t been spoiled by man and all of his industrialization. If you are looking for a quiet place to retire and do some fishing, this just my be that slice of heaven you have been hoping to stumble across.

The population as of July 2007 was only 5,894, and I doubt it has grown much in the past three years since then. As far as Races are concerned, not that it matters in 2010, but here is the break down anyways. Races in Floral City:

* White Non-Hispanic (94.3%)

* Hispanic (2.6%)

* Black (1.6%)

* Two or more races (1.1%)

* American Indian (0.9%)

If you were curious to break it down even further, the Ancestries are as follows: German (24.2%), English (16.3%), Irish (12.8%), United States (8.6%), Italian (7.6%), Polish (4.2%) The Elevation above sea level is 68 Feet, and the land area is roughly 23.3 square miles. As far as population density is concerned, there are only 253 people per square mile, which is an extremely low population density to say the least.

If you like the wilderness, and you like unspoiled waterways, then you owe it to yourself to come to Florida and check out this natural undisturbed place of flowers and beauty.
